A Church and a Museum

Sorry for not updating soon, but I have been a busy with my classes. I am taking an intensive German language class and just started my German culture class. They are here to help me get adjusted to Germany and speaking the language obviously. I am definitely understanding and speaking German better, but it is still a bit of a challenge.

Last week on Wednesday, the culture class visited and had a tour of St. Elizabeth church, or Elizabeth Kirche in German. It is a church from the 1200s and it was built in honor of St. Elizabeth. It was the first gothic style church in Germany.

Model of the church, used by the blind to understand the building

She was an Hungarian princess who worked with the poor and sick and constructed a hospital here in Marburg. After she was made a saint this large church was built and in the 1500s it was made into a Protestant church. The tour we had allowed us to view St. Elizabeth’s original grave, her shrine, and the graves of the rulers of Marburg, the Landgraves. I only have a couple picture from the inside of the church.

On last Thursday all the German languages classes visited the city of Kassel in Hesse. It was an hour or so train ride from Marburg. The train ride was not a problem at all. It was a super rainy and cold day though, so my plan to explore the city after the museum was moved to a later date.

Kessel
The point of the trip was to visit the Grimm Welt museum. The Brothers Grimm lived and worked in the state of Hesse, and especially in Kassel. The museum was about their life and what they worked on. A large section was dedicated to the fairytales they collected, and another section was dedicated to their life and how they lived. The most interesting section to me was their work on the German dictionary, they started it in the 1830s and the complete one wasn’t finished till the 1970s. The Brothers both died working on it. It had some very interesting topics and comments. It was a very lovely museum.

The total ink predicted the Grimms used. It is real ink.

Bonus:
I have decided to add a small little bonus section onto this blog. This Thursday my German class went on a little tour around the city of Marburg on the Grimm path. It is a trail with artwork based on the fairytales. I have added the English name as a caaption. This trail lead us up to the castle, and I got some lovely views of Marburg. Afterwards I enjoyed lunch at the Biergarten next to the castle.

The Tower over the Town

This week has went well, and we have started our German language class. I was placed in the correct class and I am excited to see how this class will go. I’m hoping my German improves before I come back.

This week though as you can tell by the title I went to a tower over the town I am in. The tower is called the Spiegelslustturm or the Kaiser-Wilhelm Tower. It sits on a hill and offers lovely views. It was a bit of a rainy and foggy day, but it gave the woods on the hike up to the tower and the view of Marburg a fairytale or medieval vibe. Hope you enjoy the pictures!

I love how the moss clung to everything
